The Town of Garner Finance Department is adding the new position of Accountant to its busy team.
As the Town continues to experience significant growth, its financial record keeping needs and accounting complexity have also increased.

An employee in this class performs professional accounting and finance work for the receiving, disbursing, and accounting of revenues and expenditures for the Town.
Work involves participation in the accounts payable, general ledger preparation and maintenance, bank reconciliation, fixed assets, accounts receivable, and general financial reporting.
In addition, the role assists with audit, internal controls, and budget monitoring.
The employee must exercise judgment and initiative in identifying and resolving the daily problems and activities of the fiscal control system.
Work is performed in accordance with established Town financial policies and procedures, local ordinances, and North Carolina General Statures governing the responsibilities of local government fiscal operations under the North Carolina Fiscal Control Act.
The Accountant will act in the absence of the Accounting Services Supervisor.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Finance Director and is evaluated through conferences, performance appraisals, reports, and an independent audit of the financial records.
Examples of Duties
Performs general ledger preparation and maintenance, budgetary accounting, financial reporting, fixed assets, miscellaneous invoicing, and related tasks.
Analyzes, tabulates and completes a wide variety of state, federal and other records and reports.
Balances and reconciles bank accounts, general ledger and other accounts monthly.
Prepares accounting procedures and manuals including research, writing, and editing.
Assists other municipal departments with accounting related questions and procedures.
Interprets and enforces current fiscal policies and practices for the department.
Assembles statistical, tax, and accounting data on request.
Serves as back up to payroll operations, processes payroll and payroll changes.
Serves as back up to accounts payable as needed.
Generates special reports and statements for Town management as requested.
Administers and manages Financial Software as necessary to perform required duties.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have:
an Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a closely related field and at least 5 years of accounting experience;
OR
a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a closely related field and at least 3 years of accounting experience;
OR
a Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration or a closely related field and at last two years of accounting experience.
Preference will be given to applicants with prior public sector accounting experience.
Preference will be given to applicants who have earned the North Carolina Certified Local Governmental Finance Officer designation.
Preference will be given to applicants who have earned the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
Additional Information
The salary range shown is the hiring range.
The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
Hybrid work (in office and remote) will be possible after successfully completing the probationary period.
