Description of Work
The Mission of the Department of Public Instruction:
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state's public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for an Accountant I (Working Title: Grants Accountant) for our Accounting Controls & Reporting section.
The Office of Agency Financial Services is responsible for state-level financial planning, reporting, budgeting, and accounting services for the Department of Public Instruction.
It performs program analyses, internal services, and monitoring for the Department and is responsible for supporting the financial and personnel systems.
There are five primary work groups in this division - Budget Management, Accounting Controls and Reporting, Cash Management, Accounts Payable, and Purchasing and Contract Services.
The area is responsible for seeing that all the initiatives and legislative goals are carried out in a fiscally responsible and effective manner pursuant to legislation and policy.
Responsible for recommending policy and process improvements and conducting analyses on data managed within the area.
This position is responsible for the management of the Child Nutrition claims reimbursement to public school units and non-units, federal reimbursement requests, federal reporting, and Cash Management Improvement Act (CMIA) reporting.
The Department of Public Instruction uses a vendor developed system to provide Local Education Agencies, Charter Schools, Residential Childcare Institutions and private schools the ability to electronically file their Child Nutrition claims and to collect meal counts and financial cost data.
This position works with all parties to ensure the software meets the mission of DPI related to Child Nutrition.
(That is to fulfill State Board policy and federal and state legislation that requires an accountable system for payment of claims of the National School Lunch, School Breakfast, After School Snack and Special Milk Programs).
Additional duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a degree in business administration, finance, public administration, or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution with 18 semester hours of accounting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
