Description
Do you have a passion for working with youth, a knack for balancing fun and safety, and a desire to provide the best experience possible for our campers and families?
Cary is seeking energetic and creative individuals at least 18 years of age who are enthusiastic about working with elementary-aged children to serve as Summer Day Camp Counselors.
Camp Counselors are responsible for effectively organizing and instructing recreational and educational activities for youth day camps.
Camp Counselors will supervise campers during programs, games, and field trips; assist with carpool in the morning and afternoon; and complete end-of-day cleaning procedures.
Camp Staff are required to participate in general training prior to camp.
Camp locations include Bond Park Community Center and Mills Park Elementary.
This is a seasonal (May-August), non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours.

Typical Tasks
Manages the group to ensure a safe and healthy camp for all participants during all activities (classroom, gym, outside, bus/transportation, off site field trips);
Uses group management skills to engage all children in daily activities;
Ensures the safety of all campers;
Assists with implementation of age-appropriate recreational and educational activities to keep children active and help them develop skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship;
Sets up, takes down, and works with others to clean camp room and equipment daily;
Carries out behavior management procedures and handles camper emergencies;
Assists with camp opening and closing, including camper drop-off and pick-up;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of traditional camps; General knowledge of equipment and supplies required for camp operation; Good organizational and time management skills; Strong oral and written communication skills; Ability to acquire knowledge of Cary policies, procedures, and services of the department; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with general public and with other staff; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Ability to exercise judgment in controlling the activities, behavior, and safety of camp attendees.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years old
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED
Requires some experience engaging with youth in a paid or volunteer capacity
CPR and First-aid Certification preferred; training opportunities available
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
