POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE Multilingual Learners Teacher SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT Assigned Schools SALARY Teacher Salary Schedule plus supplement FLSA STATUS Exempt REPORTS TO Principal SUPERVISES Students WORK WEEK SCHEDULE Monday - Friday WORK HOURS 40 NUMBER OF MONTHS PER YEAR 10 Position Purpose: ESL teachers instruct students whose first language is not English.
The goal is to teach the NC English Language Development Standard Course of Study.
ESL teachers instruct Multilingual Learners to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade-level proficiency in all academic areas.
ESL teachers must be highly knowledgeable in the content and structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non-native speakers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of various methods of teaching English to non-native speakers Knowledge of laws concerning Title III Extensive knowledge of OCS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum and OCS policies and effective instructional practices Thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process in grades K-12 Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when a student is participating in an inclusive activity Ability to motivate and inspire students Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment Ability to perform general clerical duties Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom and their school environments Ability to operate common office machines Ability to maintain basic files and records Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents, and the community Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in an applicable field for applicable level(s) If transferring from a teaching position from another school system in or out of state, must have received routine meets standards or above standard evaluations with no action plans for improvement Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Must hold a valid Teacher’s License issued by the state of NC in the applicable field and for the level assigned.
Must not be on the NCDPI list of teachers no longer qualified to teach and/or must not be currently engaged in a certification revocation hearing process Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles Preferred Qualifications: National Board Certification Demonstrated record of achieving Highly Qualified status on evaluations Spanish Speaking ML Teacher Duties and Responsibilities: Teaches a full load of classes just like the mainstream teacher.
He/she may have classes that are a combination of pull-out and co-teaching.
Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
Collaborates with teachers to check student progress, teach the NC ELD SCOS as well as help student/mainstream teachers with strategies for building academic language in the content areas.
Administers standardized test administrations in accordance with all applicable Code of Ethics, Testing Code of Ethics, NCDPI, and/or national standards and regulations.
This includes WIDA Screener (to determine initial ML placement) and ACCESS for ELLs (annual English Language Proficiency assessment).
Fulfills the role of a cultural broker between: Mainstream teacher- ML student Mainstream teacher- Parent/Guardian Administrator – ML student Administrator - Parent/Guardian School personnel – ML student School personnel- Parent/Guardian EC Team – ML student EC team - Parent/Guardian Provide other colleagues with support in best practices of serving Multilingual Learners via coaching, staff-wide professional development, co-teaching, modeling, resource support, etc.
Teacher Duties and Responsibilities: Plan, organize, and provide instruction in English that meet state and federal standards Provide instruction that is consistent and coordinated with the district’s/school’s instructional program to ensure that students meet and exceed learning targets Develop and deliver lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies Address all aspects of communication through appropriate instruction that develops each student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in the appropriate content area Administer academic and language assessments to evaluate student progress in meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth and progress Provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages student responsibility and incorporates challenging instructional strategies Assist with the administration of implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner Adapt curriculum to provide individual, small group, and/or remedial instruction to meet the needs of individual students and subgroups of students Establish and maintain standards of student behavior required to run an orderly and productive classroom environment Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement Oversee assigned out-of-classroom activities during the school day, as needed Appraise your effectiveness and demonstrate successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness Strive to maintain and improve professional competence Participate in school management and share responsibilities for the total school program Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required Administer and supervise standardized test administrations all applicable Code of Ethics, Testing Code of Ethics, NCDPI, and/or national standards and regulations Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal WORKING CONDITIONS PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force.
Substantial amount of time spent standing and/or walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments and come into direct contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
