JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for coordinating preventative health programs and patient care related to workers' compensation and may provide professional medical care to City employees.
This position also serves as the primary Designated Employer Representative (DER) to ensure Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation compliance with PHMSA, Safety Sensitive, and Federal Motor Carrier positions are in compliance.
The ideal candidate will have experience as an Occupational Health Nurse for a municipality, employer, etc.

JOB REQUIREMENTS Provide professional medical care for occupational and non-occupational illnesses and injuries; follow up on recommended medical absences.
Complete referrals, monitor workers' compensation, and follow up with appropriate persons/entities; collaborate with the Safety Officer as needed Provide physical assessments and pre-employment exams on selected applicants Create and conduct HIPAA, CPR, and blood-borne pathogens training Coordinate health clinics such as blood drives, vaccine clinics, mobile mammography, CPR/AED, etc.
Collaborate with medical providers for annual examinations of Firefighters and Police Officers; meet all protocol requirements to include but not limited to drawing venous blood; check blood sugars; centrifuge and separating whole blood, package, and transport blood to hospital for testing; collect urine specimens; perform pulmonary functions test, electrocardiograms, and visual acuity and hearing tests.
Identify and participate in health initiatives that improve employees’ health, focusing on high-risk conditions Serve as a liaison and DER for WC claims, LOA requests, New Hire, random and DOT drug screens Write and maintain medical policies, procedures and processes, letters, etc.
Monitor and oversee patient care, including doctor visits, therapy sessions, and return to work Collaborate with the Benefits Team Maintain files and records Coordinate and collaborate with the Well-Being Coordinator and Safety Officer to offer health and well-being events Oversee calibration of blood pressure monitors Sometimes, work a flexible schedule to provide service, training, and support to employees Performs other related duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of NC (selected candidate must be able to present license when the offer letter is signed); LPN may be considered Current certification in CPR, AED, and First/Aid or ability to become certified within 6 months of hire date One to three years of experience as an Occupational Health Nurse providing medical care, reviewing and interpreting doctor notes Excellent customer service skills and ability to respond respectfully and display an approachable demeanor while building strong working relationships Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Effectively prioritize and escalate employee issues Interpret and analyze multiple data points and facts Knowledge of medical terminology Ability to manage business expectations and resolve concerns, by communicating status and issues KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS Proven experience in providing care in an occupational environment.
Working knowledge of administration of medications and interpreting lab results Working knowledge of OSHA and CDC guidelines Working knowledge of professional nursing standards and practices Skill in performing venipuncture and capillary stick Skill in operating in a fast-paced environment Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment Strong communication skills – written, verbal, persuasion, motivation, facilitation of strong working relationships SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: This position reports directly to the Human Resources Manager, Benefits.
This position does not manage others.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include OSHA rules and regulations, medical policy and procedures, the Personnel Policy and Procedures Manual, DOT regulations, NFPA guidelines, and HIPAA Guidelines.
These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied professional medical coordinating duties.
The volume of work contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to provide professional medical coordination to City employees.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with physicians, vendors, co-workers, hospital personnel, elected and appointed officials, members of the general public, fire and police personnel, representatives of the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, and job applicants.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts typically give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and justify, negotiate, or settle matters.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching.
The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, or outdoors.
The employee is exposed to machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather.
The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: May oversee an administrative support position and/or a medical professional, such as an LPN.
