Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching.
We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year.
Our average total annual expenditure exceeds $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research.
The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty.
We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employ approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions.
Our mission is supported by an administrative and technical staff of 20, with an additional 20 staff directly supporting research.
Position Summary
The Visiting TAP will teach Biodiversity (BIOL 104).
The course is part of the required introductory core course sequence for all Biology majors and enrolls approximately 400 students.
Pedagogical materials (syllabi, learning goals, slide presentations, guided reading questions, quizzes and exams) are in place; course development requirements are minimal.
Responsibilities for the lecture portion of the class:
- Prepare a syllabus, outlining topics and reading assignments in the textbooks for each class period
- Prepare and present lectures for each class
- Prepare 4 exams and provide guidance to TAs about grading
- Post class materials (e.
g.
Powerpoint presentations, synopsis of main points, assignments) on Canvas before each class or recitation
- Hold at least two hours of office hours each week
- Hold a one-hour review session before each exam
- Respond promptly to email messages from students
Responsibilities for weekly recitation sessions, which are led by TAs:
- Devise a plan for each recitation session
- Assign homework problems
- Meet with TAs periodically to ensure that the recitations are running smoothly
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD in biological sciences or a related degree; Strong background in ecology, evolution, and/or organismal biology.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
At least one year of college teaching experience; experience with teaching a lecture course.
