Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit Student Affairs at the Gillings School of Global Public Health provides an array of services and resources to prospective, admitted and current students.
We aim to enhance student development by providing a supportive and safe environment in which you can achieve academic, social and professional success.
We coordinate major schoolwide programs such as orientations, a student activities fair, a career and internship fair and professional development workshops.
We work to recruit excellent students; coordinate diversity outreach programs to expose high school, undergraduate students and professionals to the field of public health; and offer career services for current students and recent alumni.
Position Summary The Academic Coordinator is the primary point of contact for an assigned group of Gillings students.
This individual supports each assigned student by guiding their educational planning and progress, connecting them with resources that will maximize student success, proactively identifying and helping remove barriers, and responding to all types of issues identified by the student or by faculty that could impede student progress.
The Academic Coordinator uses a high touch approach, maintaining a wide network of connections and collaborating flexibly with faculty and with other Academic Coordinators to ensure that each student’s experience is maximized in a positive way.
The Academic Coordinator is a key part of recruitment and admissions activities, working closely with faculty and with Enrollment Management staff to help attract and admit top students.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to the delivery of student advising and counseling or student personnel services, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Essential Qualifications: - Experience developing and delivering student services with direct impact on students’ educational experiences.
- Higher education experience including work with students in the specific degree levels supported (bachelor’s, master’s and/or doctoral).
- Knowledge and experience delivering student advising and/or counseling services.
- Ability to master comprehensive subject matter expertise about multiple Gillings academic departments, programs and/or concentrations, including networks of faculty and their research interests.
- Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Track record that demonstrates service orientation and passion for serving students.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high volume of requests and tasks efficiently, with high level of accuracy.
- Resilience; demonstrated ability to problem-solve, while maintaining a positive, solution-focused approach.
- High degree of professionalism and a demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality in sensitive situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholder groups, including multicultural competencies and experience working with diverse populations.
- Ability to ensure and apply compliance with university and external policies and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Preferred Qualifications: - Master’s degree in related area such as student affairs, education or counseling.
Bachelor’s degree with equivalent training or experience may be substituted.
- If position serves online student populations, experience understanding and helping overcome challenges experienced by online students.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements Campus Security Authority Responsibilities This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act.
This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
