Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals.
Steam is critical to the operations of the University and UNC Hospitals.
It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing.
Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation.
It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load.
Cogeneration Systems is part of UNC Energy Services.
Position Summary This recruitment is for two (2) Energy Utilities Specialist – Journey positions (00031430, 00057098).
By applying, you will be considered for both positions.
The position requires a thorough knowledge of Boiler Steam Plant Operations which includes all associated plant auxiliary equipment and components.
Position requires some knowledge in the operation of steam turbines and generators.
Position requires the knowledge in the operation of mix bed and demineralizer water filtration systems and the regeneration process of such systems.
Position requires the skill and ability to operate multiple gas or fuel oil fired package steam boilers and inspect package boiler associated equipment for proper lubrication, proper cooling water, monitor and detect vibration and noise related issues.
Position will be able to assess the overall operational status of all said plant system equipment.
An essential skill is the ability to communicate accurately and concisely when receiving, instructing and requesting system operating instructions.

This position is required to participate in the UNC-Chapel Hill Respiratory Protection Program and is required to pass a Respirator Fit Test annually.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Preferred candidate will have DCS, CEMS training or boiler/industrial plant operating experience, working knowledge of personal computers and associated software applications and experience with a work management system (for example MAXIMO).
Required Licenses/Certifications Valid NC Driver’s License.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements The environmental conditions range from air conditioned and heated control room to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions.
This position will be required to work in all conditions at various lengths of time depending on the need for operational requirements.
When required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments, operations procedures and safety equipment are provided.
Part of the equipment is located outdoors and operation and/or maintenance are required year round.
Position requires an ability to climb ladders/stairs, work with hands/arms over head, lift/move 50+ lbs.
, and the ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus if necessary.
This position is an Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Position.
