What You'll Be Doing The EMS Field Training Officer assures the citizens and visitors of Wake County receive prompt, compassionate, clinically excellent emergency medical care in a highly reliable, efficient and professional manner with a specific focus on the training, education, precepting and evaluation of emergency medical series personnel at all credential levels.
The EMS Field Training Officer directly manages and evaluates probationary employee and employees needing remedial work.
In addition, they provide direct delivery of training material through small group and one-on-one sessions.
A successful candidate is someone with a high level of critical thinking, problem solving, multitasking ability, prioritization and interpersonal skills as well as communication skills both written and verbal.
In addition, they should possess in-depth emergency medical services knowledge and advance skills.
Key Responsibilities: Perform advanced life support skills utilizing liberal standing order protocols to guide patient care Provide comfort and compassion to patients and family Interview and assess patients, family members and bystanders to assist in the development of a patient care plan Lift and carry equipment, stretchers and patients to facilitate response to and transport patients Effectively and efficiently utilize technology such as in-vehicle navigation, laptop computers, biomedical equipment, computer aided dispatch, online education portals, online evaluation software, etc.
Evaluate employee performance through direct observation and review of clinical and operational performance reports Draft employee evaluations and plan and conduct effective meetings related to employee performance Effectively and respectfully communicate to individuals and groups, in both written and verbal form Develop employee goals/expectations and assist employees with implementation of these goals and/or achieving these expectations Coordinate with the Division of Professional Development, FTEP Coordinator and others in the evaluation and management of new employees or employees being remediated Act as a mediator and interpret and enforce policies, protocols and work standards Plan, schedule and conduct meetings Develop performance improvement plans Safely and respectfully operate an emergency vehicle in both non-emergency and emergency mode at all times of day and in all types of weather Understand scene management and the Incident Command System Effectively operate within an Incident Command System Direct the work of others in a collaborative and cooperative manner Attend and participate in training Instruct and evaluate employees on clinical skills and simulations Other responsibilities include: Participate in community outreach and public education events Participate in various department specific committees regarding decisions on protocols, equipment, vehicles, uniforms, etc.
Notes: Hazmat Gear Requirements: Due to the unpredictability of the hazards encountered in the course of work, the applicant must be able to successfully fit test in, wear and perform essential job functions in respiratory personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, NIOSH-certified N95/P100 air-purifying respirators, and a full-face tight-fitting respirator with the appropriate air-purifying cartridge.
Applicants must also be able to wear, and perform essential job functions in Level C personal protective equipment (Full Tyvek Suit, Chemical-Resistant Gloves, Chemical-Resistant Boots).
Physical Requirements: During the first week of employment, employees must demonstrate a minimum level of physical ability and fitness by successfully completing the Wake County EMS Physical Ability Test (EMS-PAT).
Incumbent employees, in any position which have field response as part of their job duties, must successfully complete the EMS-PAT annually.
The purpose of this physical test is to simulate and evaluate an employee’s ability to perform the minimum physical requirements of the job.
The test is performed solo (i.
e.
, tasks that would traditionally require two employees have been modified so they can be completed by one employee), the events are performed continuously and there is a time limit of 7 minutes and 5 seconds.
The events in the test consist of unbuckling a seatbelt and exiting a vehicle from the driver’s seat; stretcher lift simulation (using a 95-lb curl bar); stretcher movement with equipment 100ft (50ft down and 50ft back) over curb stops bolt to the floor; stretcher stair carry simulation (using a 95-lb curl bar); equipment lift and place; equipment movement/transfer (which includes kneeling 8 times); patient drag (using a 150-lb manikin strapped to a backboard) a total of 100ft; chest compressions (2 mins of chest compressions at a rate of 120 a minute); repeat stretcher movement; climbing into the back of ambulance through side door.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience) Associate's degree or equivalent in Emergency Medical Services or related field Three years of experience working as a Paramedic including one year of experience as a medically cleared Paramedic in the Wake County EMS system Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record Certification as a North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMTP) Completion of a Field Training or Preceptor/Adult Learning Course Equivalent education and experience are accepted Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) Bachelor's degree How Will We Know You're 'The One'?
