The North Carolina State Bar is the state agency responsible for regulating the legal profession for the protection of the public.
*Job Title:* Deputy Counsel
*Purpose of the Job:* The primary responsibilities of this position are to investigate and report to the Grievance Committee upon grievances filed against lawyers practicing in North Carolina and to provide legal advice and support to other assigned committees, boards, and commissions.
The Counsel may assign other responsibilities of the Office of Counsel.
This position does not include significant litigation responsibilities.
*Primary Job Responsibilities:*
_Work with the Grievance Committee_
* Direct investigations of grievances involving lawyers practicing in North Carolina
* Prepare reports and make recommendations to the Grievance Committee concerning disposition of grievances
* Staff meetings of the Grievance Committee
* Communicate with grievance complainants and respondents
* Draft written discipline
* Provide occasional advice and support to the Attorney Client Assistance Program
Work with other State Bar Committees, Boards, and Commissions
* Provide legal advice and support to other assigned State Bar committees, boards, and commissions
* Prepare meeting agendas and minutes
* Staff committee meetings
* Draft proposed rule changes
*Accountability and Authority: *This position reports directly to the Counsel and the Executive Director of the State Bar, with whom the Deputy Counsel consults concerning issues of State Bar policy, legal issues, and proceedings in which the Deputy Counsel represents the State Bar.
A Deputy Counsel is expected to exercise independent judgment concerning assigned responsibilities and complete all assigned responsibilities timely with minimal supervision.
Deputy Counsel have limited supervisory responsibility, in conjunction with the Counsel, for the paralegal, administrative, and investigative staff.
*Required education, experience, and skills:*
* JD degree and active North Carolina law license with no professional discipline required
* Five or more years’ experience in the practice of law, which may include in part judicial clerk experience, strongly preferred
* Trial experience in state or federal courts or administrative tribunals preferred but not required
* Excellent writing and speaking skills required
* Academic success in undergraduate and law school required
*Working Conditions:*
* Position is exempt in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act
* Hours: 9:00 a.
m.
to 5:00 p.
m.
Monday – Friday, one hour lunch break
* Overtime as required, unpaid
* Some travel, usually in state, mileage reimbursed
