Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The Office of University Counsel represents the University, which entails providing legal advice and counsel to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, the administration, faculty, and staff on legal matters involving or affecting the institution.
We advise the University administration on a broad range of initiatives, issues, and policy matters, and serve as a liaison between the University and its related and affiliated entities on legal and policy issues.
We also assist with program implementation and provide legal and policy training for internal University audiences and educational programs for legal audiences and general audiences outside the institution on matters affecting the University and higher education in general.
We engage in crisis and opportunity management and preventative counseling, including the identification of high risk activities and enterprises conducted by the University and the articulation of methodologies or strategies for coping with the risks.
Our Office is responsible for selecting and supervising any outside counsel engaged by the institution.
Position Summary The Paralegal position will assist the Office of University Counsel in a wide variety of legal projects including (a) litigation support in connection with court and administrative agency proceedings and internal University hearings; (b) document management and production related to discovery obligations, public records requests, employment matters, subpoenas, and other legal matters; and © coordination with various offices on campus and with other state agencies.
The duties of the paralegal position include: gathering and reviewing documents; preparing first drafts of discovery responses, pleadings, substantive correspondence, and other litigation materials; e-discovery compliance; researching legal issues; maintaining knowledge of relevant federal and state laws and regulations as well as University policies and guidelines; client interviews; assisting in State debt collection responsibilities; creating and maintaining quality, accessible information databases and systems for management of high-volume project load.
This paralegal position may require appearances in federal and state courts, administrative proceedings, and other forums.
This work will include reviewing, filing, and serving pleadings and other litigation documents; engaging directly with clients, outside counsel, opposing counsel, court personnel, experts, and other stakeholders; preparing responses to subpoenas and regulatory inquiries; preparing exhibits for depositions and hearings; attending trials, and assisting with courtroom technology.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Completion of an accredited paralegal program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Excellent oral and written communication skills including familiarity with common legal terminology.
Must be able to uphold highest standards of discretion and confidentiality and exercise good judgment on day-to-day decisions.
Experience managing large document productions, including the use of eDiscovery software.
Personal accountability for work and work product; willing and able to follow through on complex issues.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
Computer legal research skills and electronic discovery experience.
Notary Public appointment or obtain same within one year of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Completion of an accredited paralegal program.
Notary Public appointment in State of North Carolina, or obtain Notary Public appointment within six (6) months of hire date.
Experience working with Relativity and SharePoint.
